03 September 2021, Friday

The symposium on “Excellence in High Courts of Appeal” was held on September 2, 2021 following the opening ceremony of 2021-2022 judicial year and the new facility of the Court of Cassation with international participation.

At the symposium held at the Court of Cassation’s Conference Hall, chief justices and prosecutor generals from 3 continents and 13 countries shared their knowledge and experience on excellence in high courts of appeal within the framework of their own country practices.

Mehmet Akarca, the President of the Court of Cassation, who made the opening speech of the symposium and chaired the sessions, stated that the foundations of the society that we all cherish, such as freedom, justice, and social peace can only be preserved with a well-functioning judicial system.

Mr. Akarca also mentioned the importance of determining the principles that will guide in overcoming the difficulties encountered in the courts of appeal and the importance of the responsibilities of the appeal courts and added: “Contributing to justice policies and facilitating access to justice, dissemination of case-laws in order to create the unity of case laws, educating the public, students and future generations on the role and importance of the judiciary due to its educational role are among the responsibilities of the courts of appeal”.

At the end of the symposium, where the best practices of different legal traditions and various judicial systems were discussed, 10 basic principles of excellence in high courts of appeal were demystified by benefitting from country presentations.

It is aimed to develop a non-binding guide for the high courts of appeal by detailing these principles determined at the end of the symposium with the ongoing international meetings and thus to contribute to the global judiciary.
